Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
